Six Hoover's Martial Arts students earn Black Belt status

Six students received an early Christmas present. On Dec. 21, Ethan Cushing, Jessica Blackowske, Colter Elkin, Sam Auch and Tony Auch completed their 10 levels of color belt testing. These students as successfully tested and completed their final testing to receive the rank of 1st degree Black Belt.

A minimum of two years of training and testing are required to reach the 1st Degree Black Belt level. Once the Black Belt level is reached, there are an additional nine Black Belt levels, each becoming more difficult in skills, abilities and disciplines.

The 6 students that tested in December 21 faced form, sparring and board break challenges.

Sheldon tournament
Jan. 14 brought over 400 competitors to Sheldon, Iowa, for their annual regional tournament, including 25 students from Hoover's Martial Arts in Brandon.

Excellent performances garnered 31 awards for the Brandon students, which was represented by a variety of age and competition levels from Tiny Tigers to adults. Competitors throughout the United States attend this regional tournament.

Color Belt Winners: Jon Huebner, Josh Mikeworth, Tanner Nifong, Abby Erkonen, Riley White, Dylan Bohr and Sam Siverhus.
Black Belt Winners: Will Bommersbach
Forms: First place - Matt Erkonen, Riley Peyton, Ella Roths, Jack Bommersbach, Sydney Nifong and Nick Meyerl second place - Chett Dunn; third place - Juliet Mikeworth, Kenyan Mikeworth, Claire Siverhus
Sparring: First place - Dawson Skorczeski, Ella Roths, Jack Bommersbach, Sydney Nifong, Chett Dunn, Nick Meyer; second place - Maxwell Kane and Claire Siverhus; third place - Morgan Westendorf and Christian Dunn
Weapons: Third lace - Bri King, Kevin Gillespie, Kendra Kuehn.
