13 score in JV boys 70-45 win
Thirteen players on Brandon Valley’s junior varsity boys teams contributed points to the team’s 70-45 win over Rapid City Central.
“We did a great job of sharing the ball today. The guys used each other to get open, and then combining that with great pressure defense causing turnovers we were able to get some easy looks,” said coach Craig Nelson. “Outside of that, we finally started converting our lay-ups when we got them.”
The Lynx controlled the game from start to finish, posting a 20-12 lead after a quarter of play, 33-21 at the half, and 50-30 at the end of the third.
Three players finished in double digits. Nic Peterson led the charge with 17, followed by Jake Adams with 13 and Nate Winter with 12. Kevin Petersn and Jacob Bruget tossed in six and five points, respectively.
Winter and Kevin Peterson were the team leaders on the boards with six apiece. Adams grabbed five and Bruget accounted for four. Nic Peterson offered three assists.
“We need to continue to build on the unselfish nature that we displayed in this game,” said Nelson, whose team improved to 6-4.” We realized good things will happen when we share the ball.”
Splitrock Ladies League
The Splitrock Ladies bowled Jan. 24 with the following results: High team game and series: Style On Main, 918 and 2,548. High individual game and series: Vickie Wielenga, 212 and 481.
There were no splits picked up this week.
Lynx frosh boys split with SFW
Brandon Valley’s frosh boys split wins with Sioux Falls Washington Jan. 24 in Brandon. The Lynx A team handed the Warriors a 51-43 loss, while the B team suffered a 56-41 setback.
In the A game, Peter Choudek and Drew Reinschmidt led the scoring with 17 and nine points, respectively. Choudek had 13 rebounds and Tyler Erk hauled in nine.
The Lynx were 15-for-45 (33 percent) from the field and 19-for-37 (51 percent) at the free throw line.
Despite the win, coach Tom Grode said his team had too many turnovers in the game. “But we made up for it with hustle and rebounding,” he said. “It was a very nice effort by the boys.”
The victory improves the A team to 9-3.
In the B game, Kody Peterson led the charge with a dozen points and Alex Hamer chipped in six. Nate Bennett was the leader on the boards with seven.
Grode said the boys played hard, but struggled to put the ball in the hoop.
The team finished with a 24 percent effort from the field (13-54) and were 13-for-45 (29 percent) at the free throw line.
Stevens tops Lynx JV boys, 60-48
Twenty-two turnovers and a poor defensive effort were to blame for Brandon Valley’s 60-48 loss to Rapid City Stevens in junior varsity boys basketball action.
“We came off a great game last night against Rapid City Central and probably got a little complacent thinking we could just lace ‘em up and come out and win this one too,” Lynx coach Craig Nelson said. “We didn't have the same energy and fire as yesterday, and it showed throughout.”
The Lynx trailed by five at the end of the first, 13-8, and took a two-point lead into the break, 35-23. The Knights reclaimed their five-point edge after three quarters, 38-33, and outscored the Lynx 22-15 in the fourth to claim the win.
“Our defensive effort was as bad as it has been in quite a few games, so we need to recommit to that end of the floor,” Nelson said. “Offensively we played well when we didn't turn the ball over. We must take better care of the ball, value possession each time down the floor.”
Jacob Bruget led the team with 10 points six rebounds and two blocked shots. Nic Peterson, who only saw action for one quarter, had nine points. Adam Bauer tossed in eight and Devin West had seven. Nate Winter hauled in seven rebounds.
