Valley Springs woman opens doors to doggie day spa Monday

The community of Valley Springs is gaining its first business of 2012.

Theresa Otten will open the doors Feb. 6 to Theresa’s Doggie Day Spa, a home-based dog grooming business located at 405 Jackson St.

“There are a lot of dogs in Valley Springs,” Otten said, “and I’ve already had lots of people asking me about it (the business).”

Otten opted to venture into business for herself after being laid off from a job she’d had for 11 years. It was during a visit to her dog groomer that she got the idea to open a grooming business of her own. She learned the trade from her groomer and has been honing those skills on her own four dogs as well as those of her extended family.
While there are schools that offer dog-grooming courses, there is no formal certification required for the industry, Otten said.

An addition – specifically for Theresa’s Doggie Day Spa – was built onto the east side of the Otten home. It features an office area and fully equipped groom room.

“The addition was a family affair,” Otten said. Her father and brother both helped with the construction.

Until now Otten and other pet owners in Valley Springs have had to travel out of town for this type of service. Otten, herself, has four dogs so a trip to the groomer typically set her back $120 each time.

Otten said her dog-grooming services are competitively priced. “No one in the surrounding area little towns has a dog groomer so we have to go Brandon or Sioux Falls,” she said.

Valley Springs Finance Officer Sandy Severtson said Otten’s dog grooming service is the first of its kind in the city.

“It should be a good addition to the community (because) there are no other dog groomers in town,” Severtson said.

Otten, a 35-year Valley Springs resident, says she looks forward to walking out her back door to her work. “I won’t have to drive to work in the wintertime … and I can just go out my back door and be here. No bosses – just me,” she said.

Otten plans to host a grand opening in the near future but has not set a date.
