It went down to the wire in Friday’s ESD Conference dual between Brandon Valley and Yankton, while the Lynx had an easy time against the Tea Area Titans in the follow-up match. The Lynx squeaked out a 40-36 ESD win against the Bucks and posted a 70-0 blowout over the Titans.

“This was our first ESD win – and they don’t come easy,” said Lynx head coach Kraig Presler. Yankton defeated the Lynx by 13 points in mid-December.

With the outcome of the Yankton match resting on the shoulders of heavyweight Josiah McGee, the Lynx junior turned the tables on Yankton’s Robbie Borgstrum midway through the second period. The inspired McGee shouldered the Yankton junior at the 3-minute, 36-second mark to seal the 40-36 ESD win.

McGee was put in that position by freshman Clayton Ebright (220 pounds), who used just 2 minutes and 17 seconds of the clock to pin Yankton’s Jordan Lightner. That win set the stage for McGee’s follow-up win and the team victory.

“I actually expected Josiah to get a pin because he’s pinned him before,” Presler said, “but that’s still a lot of pressure to carry on your shoulders. That’s not to say that every guy had to play their part.”

The Lynx and Bucks split the 14 matches, but Brandon Valley got five pins, a win by forfeit and a major decision victory, while Yankton earned five pins and two victories by decision.

“The big turnaround for us was Mike Frazer’s win,” Presler said.

The Lynx senior – who stepped up to the 170-pound weight class – shouldered Yankton’s Zach Sealy in 4:53.

Presler also cited Ebright’s win. The Lynx freshman was pinned earlier in the season by Lightner.

Brandon Valley’s Conner Rowbotham (106) was pinned by Yankton’s Spencer Huber, but the Lynx evened things up in the 113-pound match when Adam Presler got an easy win by forfeit. Josh Miller (120) scored a 13-0 major decision victory against Michael Montoya and Grant Dougherty (126) punctuated Brandon Valley’s lead with a pin over Cole Dather in 5:09 to give the Lynx a 16-6 advantage.

The Bucks took the next three matches, two by decision and one by pin. Brandon Valley’s Connor Smith (132) suffered a loss to Mason Strahl, who shouldered the Lynx grappler in 3:36. Braden Heidbrink (138) and Mason Bender (145) both lost by decision. Heidbrink was edged 6-3 by Casey Skillingstad, while No. 5-ranked Bender went head-to-head against No. 4-positioned Logan Smith. With neither wrestler giving up much, Smith garnered two points in the final seconds of the match to claim the 3-1 decision win.

The last time these two wrestlers met up, Bender took the win.

Wyatt Winter (152) followed up with a convincing win, pinning Levi Davis in 4:28.
Gabe Langner (160), Tony Tripp (182) and Collin Wible (195) also suffered losses.

BV vs. Tea
Open in five weight classes, the Tea Area Titans had little chance of overcoming the Lynx.

But Presler said Tea Area will be a team to reckon with.

“Tea is actually going to be getting better,” he said. “I knew we had a chance to shut them out, but it’s hard to wrestle a match like that after coming off a win against Yankton, and not getting too confident.”

Brandon Valley registered four pins and five wins by decision.

The back-to-back wins were a nice ending the Brandon Valley’s regular season schedule.

“All in all, it was really a nice way to end the regular season,” Presler said.

The Lynx begin their post-season action this Saturday, when they compete in the ESD Conference Tournament at Huron, with the action starting at 11 a.m.

“The ESD is tough,” Presler said. “I’m not positive we’ll wrestle everybody there because we will need everyone to be healthy for regionals.”

Presler the ESD is stacked with quality wrestlers in every weight category.
“If we’re lucky, we’ll bring home some ESD champions,” he said.

The Region 2A Tournament is scheduled for Feb. 16-17 at Vermillion and the state meet caps off the season Feb. 24-25 in Aberdeen.
