Schultz sinks Yankton with late-game three

Call it déjà vu, if you will.

Ben Schultz drained a wide-open three-pointer with 48 seconds left to propel the Lynx boys to a 57-55 Eastern South Dakota Conference road win Friday against Yankton at the Summit Center.

A week earlier, the Lynx suffered a similar loss when Huron won in similar fashion: a late-game trey.

Schultz’s game-winning bucket was secured by the defensive play of Kyle Peterson and Dylan Rock.

“We played a very tough and physical Yankton team,” said Lynx head coach Brent Deckert, whose team improves to 5-10 (4-7 ESD).

And the Lynx did it without the help of 6-foot-3 guard Chase Marso. Last week, a blood clot was discovered in Marso’s left shoulder. He’s undergone surgery and has begun the healing process.

“This is not the week we had planned,” Deckert said. “It started in the worst possible way. We took a day off of practice on Monday. With all the games we’ve played we thought the team really needed an extra rest day but a rest day for Chase means getting some more individual work on shooting and in the weight room.”

That’s when Marso’s blood clot was discovered, and school trainer Chad Urban advised Marso to have his arm checked out immediately.

Deckert went to his bench to fill Marso’s void, and he was pleased with what he got from them.

“We’ll never be able to replace Chase on the court but this gives other guys a chance to step up to play some varsity minutes, and the team was awesome,” he said.

For the most part, the two teams traded baskets in the first quarter with the Lynx posting a minimal 11-9 advantage. Brandon Valley then went on a 9-0 run to widen the gap, 16-9.

That’s when Schultz went to work for the Lynx, scoring the next 11 points for the Lynx, which took a 29-18 lead into the break.

“We shared the ball extremely well and got Ben off the point and tried to get him moving a bit more off screens,” Deckert said.

The Lynx and Bucks matched wits in the third. Brandon Valley put up a dozen points to Yankton’s 13.

Up by 10 going into the fourth, the Lynx had to fend off a spree of triple-counters. In the first 1:40 of the quarter, Yankton battled back to within two points and then hit four 3’s in a span of about four minutes to take a 55-54 lead with 1:23 to play.
Shortly after, Schultz hit the clutch 3-pointer.

“Give Yankton a ton of credit – much like Huron, they buried a ton of 3’s in the fourth quarter to keep the game close,” Deckert said.

Deckert said his team struggled in the opening half, giving up eight offensive boards. The Lynx tightened up their defense in the second half by not giving up a single offensive rebound.

The Lynx had 20 rebounds to Yankton’s 22. Leading the effort for Brandon Valley was Jacob Adams with nine and Schultz five. The Bucks were led by Connor Vlasman’s six and Jackson Seitzinger’s four.

“Defensively we were really good again,” the coach said. “This team impresses us every time we take the floor.”

Schultz’s 27 points fueled the Lynx. Adams and Rock also finished in double figures, scoring 14 and 10 points respectively. The Lynx were 47 percent from the field, 21-44 (5-10 from beyond the arc), and nearly perfect at the free throw line, 10-12.

Seitzinger put 15 points for the Bucks. Connor Fitzsimmons and Bryan Youngerg accounted for a dozen and 10 points, respectively. Yankton converted 19-40 (47 percent) from the floor and had equal success at the charity stripe, going 11-for-12.

Brock Wickett dished out five of the team’s 13 assists; Schults had four. The Lynx also had two steals and seven turnovers.

Yankton had 14 assists and turned the ball over 10 times.

Brandon Valley travels to Pierre this Friday and host their final two regular season games on Feb. 17 and 21, when Brookings and Watertown, respectively, pay a visit to the Lynx gym.
