For a second time this season, the Yankton Gazelles had their way with the Lady Lynx of Brandon Valley, this time a 60-48 setback.
The Lynx started strong behind the play of senior Heidi Hoff, who planted the first six points to put the team up 6-2. Yankton’s Chloe Cornemann then went to work, netting eight points in the opening quarter for an 18-17 ball game, Brandon Valley’s favor.
Neither team could escape the grasp of one another in the second stanza, with the biggest lead no more than four points. At the halftime break, the Gazelles held a two-point advantage, 30-28.
The Lynx regained the lead on an Allison Koehn 3-pointer but it was short-lived as Yankton answered back. The Gazelles then got some offensive fuel from Mikala Hora, Jenn Graanflaten and Tory Gross to widen the gap to nine, 45-37, by the end of the third.
“Yankton came out more focused than us in the second half,” Brandon Valley head coach Mark Stadem said. “We came out in a zone and their kids were able to hit shots when our kids were missing shots.”
The Lynx couldn’t overcome Yankton in the final stanza, who went on to earn the 60-48 victory.
Brandon Valley hit on 16-of-43 (37 percent) from the floor, and were 12-for-22 at the free throw line. Hoff led the charge with 20 points and Koehn added 13 to the cause. Val Peltier tossed in eight.
The Gazelles were led by Cornermann, who matched Hoff’s 20-point effort. Granflaten and Hora accounted for 13 and 12 points, respectively. Yankton shot 50 percent from the field, 23-46, and were 9-for-11 at the charity stripe.
Yankton won the fight on the boards, 34-20. Koehn led the Lynx with six and Hora had 10 for the Gazelles.
The Lynx picked off seven steals and committed six turnovers in the game; Yankton had five steals and nine turnvovers.
Brandon Valley (10-5, 6-5 ESD) will host their final game of the regular season this Friday when the Lady Governors pay a visit to Brandon. Next Tuesday, the Lady Lynx plays at Sioux Falls Washington.
