County cancels pay cut for employees

Minnehaha County commissioners Tuesday morning voted to reinstate a 5 percent pay cut they imposed this year on county employees.

County Auditor Bob Litz said the county spent less than budgeted last year and dipped into cash less than anticipated.

“That comes from fixes to the budget from the commission, very conservative department spending practices and, frankly, a little bit of luck,” he said.

In addition, bank franchise tax income this year was $362,000 more than anticipated. The county also recently got $200,000 from a surplus scrap iron sale.

In total, $1.5 million is available, and reinstating pay cuts will cost $1.14 million extra this year, Litz said.

Four of five commissioners voted for the reinstatement, which will take effect March 3.

Commissioner Dick Kelly voted against reinstating the pay cut, saying the county should build up reserves.
