Health fair promises walk-through heart

A Valley Springs mother has an inside reason for going to Thursday’s community health fair at Brandon Valley High School. She wants to show her children a close-up view of what doctors did during their brother’s surgery.

“One of the things I'm looking forward to is the inflatable heart,” Angela Danielson of Valley Springs said. “My son had heart surgery when he was 18 months old. So, my kids have seen pictures of hearts on the Internet and we have shown them what was done. But, this will be a neat way to for them to see the different parts of the heart.”

The walk-through inflatable heart shows examples of cardiovascular functions and examples of various types of heart diseases.

The Sanford Health Mega Heart will be in the activities center at Brandon Valley High School during the health fair, which is sponsored by the Brandon Valley Wellness Committee. The health fair encourages people of all ages to get active and eat healthy. The event includes demonstrations, exhibits, door prizes and more.

Another new exhibit this year is the Let’s Move South Dakota exhibit, which has six interactive stations. Hoover’s Black Belt Academy will present a conditioning/fitness class at 4 p.m. and yoga at 5:30 p.m.

The Brandon Lions Club and Exact Eye Care have teamed up to offer vision screening this year, also in the activities center.

Many popular offerings from past years will be available as well, said Margie Hanson, who is a Brandon Valley school nurse and member of the Wellness Committee. The event will offer non-fasting blood sugar screenings, non-fasting cholesterol screenings and free blood pressure checks, for example.

In the auxiliary gym, the Brandon Valley Tennis Association will be on hand, and the University of Sioux Falls will offer fitness testing. The popular “Got Milk?” photo booth will be available in the auxiliary gym as well.

HyVee chefs will hold demonstrations in the high school servery. At 3:30 and 5 p.m., the chef will present “EZ Cook Healthy Meals.” At 4:15 and 5:45 p.m., there will be a knife skills and stir fry demo.

Fun and practical door prizes for every age will be given at the fair as well, Hanson said.
