85 area youth to be honored for service
April 01. 2013 7:36AM
The Sioux Falls Downtown Lions Club will host a celebration honoring youth for volunteerism from noon to 1 pm Tuesday, April 2, at the Downtown Holiday Inn. 85 students will be celebrated for their volunteer efforts. SALSA, a program of the Helpline Center, has a mission to make a difference in our community through the volunteer efforts of high school students.
The youth are all members of the Serve & Learn Student Association (SALSA), which is the Leo Club for the Downtown Lions. It is the largest Leo Club in the world with over 1,600 participants. The youth that will be honored at the event all volunteered over 50 hours or more in the past 12 months. Many have volunteered over 100 hours in that time. The partnership between the Downtown Lions and the SALSA program started eight years ago when the Lions adopted SALSA as its LEO club.
Mayor Mike Huether and Superintendent Dr. Pam Homan will be on hand to offer their comments on youth service, and the Downtown Lions will also announce their nominee for the International Leo of the Year Award for 2013
