Xcel Energy continues to restore power in wake of destructive South Dakota ice storm

Xcel Energy crews have restored power to an estimated 47,800 customers in Sioux Falls and other South Dakota communities hard hit by an ice storm. At this hour, crews are working to restore service to an estimated 20,000 customers who remain without power.
Strong winds and freezing rain snapped trees, broke power poles and downed power lines as the storm moved through the region. Crews have been working around-the-clock since Tuesday morning to restore service as quickly and safely as possible, but adverse weather conditions have continued, resulting in new outages.
Xcel Energy expects significant progress will be made today to restore service and that the vast majority of customers will have power back by late Friday.
Xcel Energy officials want to thank their customers for their patience during this challenging restoration process and want to assure them that all available resources are dedicated to restoring power as quickly as possible.
Xcel Energy crews from South Dakota, Minnesota and North Dakota and contractors from Iowa and Wisconsin are in the field today. Responding to a call for mutual aid, additional crews from Minnesota Power, Omaha Public Power District, Kansas City Power & Light and Otter Tail Power have arrived in South Dakota bringing the total workforce to more than 350.
Xcel Energy cautions customers to stay away from downed power lines and report their location at 1-800-895-4999. All downed power lines, even if they’re not moving or sparking, are dangerous and should never be approached.
