Sioux Falls driver licensing services move to new site
By From staff reports

April 19. 2013 9:10AM
The South Dakota Driver Licensing Program is combining its Sioux Falls services into a larger, easily accessible location near the intersection of Russell Street and Kiwanis Avenue.

“This new driver licensing superstation is part of a broader initiative to improve customer service in the Sioux Falls area,” Governor Dennis Daugaard said. “Drivers should see reduced waits at this convenient new location.”

The new station went into operation at 7 a.m. Monday, April 22. The station will be open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and most Saturdays 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Russell-Kiwanis location features more space, convenient parking and high visibility, along with convenient access on a major city street just off the interstate highway system.

“We believe the new location will be convenient and quick for nearly all of our customers,” said Cindy Gerber, director of the driver licensing program. “The single, larger location will give us flexibility in staffing, but the major benefit will be for our citizens.’’

In addition to the traditional exam stations, the new site will have four self-service kiosks. The kiosks allow citizens to begin the application process themselves before they complete the process with a staff member. The kiosks should be in place by late spring, Gerber said.

The new station should keep waiting to a minimum for applicants, but Gerber reminded citizens that they may make an appointment and avoid waiting in line. To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-952-3696 or go online at

For many years the driver licensing program provided services from a full-service station on Westport Avenue near The Empire Mall and from a limited-service station in the County Administration building near downtown Sioux Falls. A decision by the Minnehaha County Commission to end the program’s lease at the downtown site prompted an assessment of service needs and possible locations in the community.

South Dakota driver licenses are valid for five years. The 2013 Legislature authorized the driver licensing program to create a system of online renewals. Once a South Dakotan has a federally compliant license, the renewal process will be able to be completed online, rather than in line, every other five-year cycle.

The Administration exam station will go out of service at the close of business today. The Westport station will end services at the close of business on Saturday.

Necessary equipment will be moved during the weekend so the new site may open promptly at 7 a.m. Monday.
