Cole VanderBeek did all he could to give Brandon Valley Lynx varsity a boost in their 2013 season opener, but it wasn’t enough to get past Sioux Falls Roosevelt, who squeaked out a 3-2 win in seven innings at Harmodon Park last Tuesday.
VanderBeek got on base two times in the game, scoring one run and had one RBI. He doubled in the third inning.
“We just couldn’t hit,” explained Lynx head coach Grant Hieb. “And the kids looked like they hadn’t seen a game in awhile.”
Connor Grove got the win for Sioux Falls Roosevelt, allowing just one run over four innings, striking out nine, walking none and giving up one hit.
The Roosevelt pitcher was fire as he threw just nine pitches and striking out three Lynx batters in the opening inning. He repeated he feat in the second inning, but threw more than nine pitches.
Staffing the mound for the Lynx were Tommy Gardner and Troy Nelson relieved him in the fifth. Jacob Mulder was behind the plate for Brandon Valley.
Roosevelt’s offense was fueled by Seth Bjordal, who had a triple, and Grove, who singled twice.
