Although no team points are kept at the Lynx Invitational, Brandon Valley head coach Troy Sturgeon knows his teams would’ve been in the mix of the top teams Saturday.
“It was a really good track meet for us,” Sturgeon said. “We were up against some of the best teams in the state, which tells you a lot.”
Brandon Valley’s Matt VandeBerg and Cam Holmes continued their winning ways Saturday, with VandeBerg claiming the top rankings in both the long and triple jumps, and Holmes sprinting to first place titles in the 200 and 400.
“Matt continues to do his thing in the long and triple jumps,” Sturgeon said.
The coach also pulled the Lynx senior onto the track to compete in the 100- and 200-meter races.
As for Holmes, his focus on the 400-meter race is paying dividends.
“Cam had a good day,” Sturgeon said. “His main focus is the 400 – that’s his race, and he’s already in mid-season condition this early in the season.”
The Lynx boys also got spirited contributions from sprinters Ryan Immeker and Devan West, both coming off extended basketball seasons, in individual races and relays.
Immeker placed sixth in the 100 and third in the 200.
“We performed really well, and also found out where we need to make some improvements,” Sturgeon said. “And we’re figuring out how to get some points out of our distance and shot put.”
Lady Lynx Emme Sumner kicked off her senior season with a first place win in the 100-meter hurdles race. Sumner blazed to a 16.2 finish to take the event.
Brandon Valley’s 4x200 relay foursome of Tiara Tingle, Cortney Bickley, Evelyn Jorgenson and Sumner captured top honors in that event, turning in a combined time of 1:51.1.
Senior Allison Koehn collected top honors in the discus with her throw of 127-0, and she placed third in the shot put with an effort of 36-0.75.
The Lady Lynx registered a first for the program in the pole vault competition Saturday.
Hailey Murray’s effort of 9-0 bested the competition, propelling the Lady Lynx sophomore to a first place finish, a first for the progran as well.
Sister Hannah Murray was third in the event. Her best vault of the day was 7-06. Jaidon Birath tied for fifth for her 7-0 pole vault.
The Lady Lynx made a statement in the 400, taking second, third and fourth places. Jorgenson raced to a 1:02 finish for second, followed by Bickley (1:03) and Tingle (1:04). Haylee Waterfall also picked up a second place in the 800 with her time of 2:29.5. Sturgeon also cited the seventh grader’s contributions in the 4x800 and 4x400 relays.
Sturgeon was also impressed by the performance Hannah Paauw in the high jump. The Lady Lynx freshman picked up a third place ranking in the eent with her jump of 5-0.
“She’s one of our freshman surprises,” Sturgeon said.
“I was happily surprised the way our girls performed,” the coach said.
The Lynx were scheduled for a triangular at Yankton Tuesday, but predicted cooler temperatures and rain have tentatively changed the event to a dual this Friday at Yankton instead. Brandon Valley is also scheduled to compete in a quadrangular at Yankton April 16 with O’Gorman, Washington and Yankton.
Team points: No team points kept. Athletes from Brandon Valley, Brookings, Lincoln, O’Gorman, Roosevelt, Washington, Yankton, Sioux City East, SC West, Luverne, Minn.
