Lady Lynx take third in 10-team tourney

After two weeks of indoor practice, unpredictable weather, last minute schedule changes and rain delays, the varsity Lady Lynx softball team still came out ready to play at a Lincoln, Neb.-hosted tournament last month.

Brandon Valley claimed third place in the 10-team event, in which games were limited to 50 minutes (four innings).

“Defensively the girls played tough the entire tournament,” said Lynx head coach Suzanne Carroll. Senior Kara Anderson, junior Brooke Becker, and sophomore Haley Andrews shared pitching duties.

BV 5, NE Aftershock 3
Brandon Valley’s offense started out strong right off the bat. The Lynx’s No. 2 spot hitter, senior Brooke Merry, smacked a line shot double to centerfield, bouncing off the fence, coming up shy of a homerun.

Merry’s effort at the plate was followed up by senior Julie Konz, who shot a single to leftfield to score the Lynx’s first run of the game.

But the Lynx offense wasn’t finished just yet, as clean-up hitter Miranda Cain stepped up to the plate and hit an out-of-the park homerun, to score two more runs.

NE Aftershocks worked their way back into the game scoring one run per inning, tying the game up in the last inning.

Brandon Valley’s Anderson started the final inning off with a single up the middle and Becca Long advanced her into scoring position. Junior Courtney Herll then came through for the Lady Lynx with a double to centerfield to score the game-winning run.

BV 4, Iowa CC Fever 1
Unlike their first game of the tournament, the Brandon Valley bats were pretty quiet for the first three innings in their contest with Iowa CC Fever I until Konz broke the silence with a single in the top of the fourth. Cain followed with another single to advance the Lynx runners, and Hannah McIlravy followed suit with a double scoring two RBI’s in the fourth.

Sophomore Katie Erickson and Long both came through with singles to score, resulting in the 4-1 victory.

BV 1, North Iowa Invasion 4
The Lady Lynx struggled to make contact in their final game of the day, a 4-1 loss to North Iowa Invastion.

McIlravy had the only hit of the game for Brandon Valley, which was a double in the fourth inning. Layne Waltner connected for the only RBI of the contest.
“Overall I’m very happy with the way the girls have started the season,” Carroll said.
