In their opening match of the season, the Lady Lynx went up against defending state champion, the O’Gorman Knights, coming out on the losing end, 163-195.
Lynx head coach Todd Geerdes said the young players were nervous heading into the competition – only their second 9-hole round of the season – last Thursday, which featured wind and cooler temperatures.
“We had a good opportunity today to see how we stack up against a team that is probably the favorite to repeat as state champions,” Geerdes said. “We managed to play pretty well considering this was only the second 9-hole round of the year. … After we got the first half of the match completed, everyone seemed to settle in and finished the round strong.”
Alana Christianson and Kaila Kuehn led Brandon Valley with a 45 and 48, respectively. Posting scores in the low 50s were Hannah Johnson (52) and Macy Clark (53), while Lauren Blue contributed a 64. Rounding out the Lady Lynx scores were Elise Oren and Jamie Johnson with a 70 and 77, respectively.
O’Gorman’s Claire Jansa was the varsity medalist, carding a 39.
With a goal of shooting 180 as a team, Geerdes said the team fell short but came away from the match knowing where they need to improve their game.
“Our putting today was good, but we need to work on hitting the fairways off of the tee box and our approach shots,” Geerdes said. “I was happy with the girls’ performance today and am excited about where we at this point of the season.”
The Lady host Madison at 3 p.m. Monday at the Brandon Municipal Golf Course and will compete in a dual with Sioux Falls Washington on April 16 and at the Yankton Invite on April 19.
