Lynx split wins with Aberdeen teams Monday

Just hours before the spring storm ravaged the area last week, the Lynx boy’s tennis team posted a 7-2 non-conference victory over Aberdeen Roncalli and dropped a 6-3 loss to ESD Conference foe Aberdeen Central.
“We were happy to be able to get these two matches in,” said Lynx head coach Mark Schlekeway, whose team had to forgo Thursday’s home match with O’Gorman and Friday’s home triangular with Rapic City Stevens and Watertown because of weather conditions.
“I knew the Aberdeen Central would bring in a good team, as they have a lot of experienced players back from last year, and against Aberdeen Roncalli we started a little slow but turned it on as the matches went on,” Schlekeway said.
Brandon Valley’s No. 1 and 2 singles players – Billy Trevillyan and Drake Van Egdom – went 2-0 on the day. Trevillyan blanked Central’s Aaron Lorenz with a pair of 6-0 sets, while Van Edgom was challenged by Joey Crompton in the first set, 7-5, followed by a 6-1 tromping.
“You can certainly tell that Billy and Drake have played varsity for a few years and we will rely on their leadership at the top flights this year,” Schlekeway said. “I am impressed with how they are thinking the game right now.”
Brandon Valley’s third win against Central came in doubles action. Van Edgom and his No. 2 doubles partner Tanner Wehrkamp pulled off the extended match against Central’s Adam Zimmerman and Alex Grandbois. It took the Lynx duo three sets to win the match, 6-3, 2-6, 10-5. “We had a tight match with them (Central) that could have gone either way,” Schlekeway said. “Unfortunately, we lost every close match other than Flight 2 doubles, but I think we can take a lot of positive things from this match, as we are right there competing with good teams.”
Brandon Valley had its way with Roncalli. In addition to singles wins by Trevillyan and Van Egdom, the Lynx registered three additional wins in singles play and two of the three doubles matches.
Austin Sadler handed Alex Bouefeuille a loss in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 10-1 in No. 4 singles, while Cooper Baltzer sidelined Keaton Deiter 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 5 singles match. Rounding out wins for the Lynx was Nathan Mutschelknaus, who defeated Parker Monson 6-2, 6-1.
Van Egdom teamed up with Lucas Mutschelknaus in No. 2 doubles. The Lynx duo defeated Kyle Martin and Keaton Deiter 6-4, 6-1. And finally, the No. 3 team Baltzer and Nathan Mutschelknaus scored 6-4, 6-0 set wins against Bouefeuille and Monson.
“I was happy that we finished those matches so strong,” Schlekeway said. “We played with confidence and took control of points early.”
The 3-1 Lynx are scheduled to host Sioux Falls Lincoln and Madison Thursday with play beginning at noon. Brandon Valley hits the road for a pair of matches next week. On Monday, they’ll face the Luverne (Minn.) Cardinals and Tuesday the team travels to Watertown for an ESD match with the Arrows.
