Rare May snowfall expected today
By From staff reports

May 01. 2013 9:01AM
When most Brandon and Valley Springs area residents awoke this morning, the ground was covered in an all-to-familiar color: white.

The area is expected to receive its first May snowfall in almost 40 years.

The National Weather Service said the area could get 1 to 2 inches of snow, which would be the first recorded snowfall in the area in May since 1976.

Rain was expected to start early today, said Amy Betty, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. That was expected to turn to snow about 6 a.m. The high temperature will reach 37.

"We are expecting maybe an inch through tomorrow morning and an additional half inch through tomorrow evening," she said. "It is going to be very wet and melt as it falls."

The last time the area had more than an inch of snow in May was 1944. Southwest Minnesota and northern Iowa could get 2 to 4 inches, Bettwy said.
