2013 Brandon Community Guide now in your hands
May 14. 2013 2:00PM
Included with this week’s Brandon Valley Challenger is the “2013 Brandon Community Guide.” It’s a yearly endeavor that the Challenger and Argus Leader Media team up to do in cooperation the Brandon Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, and of course, those businesses who so graciously support the publication through their advertisements.
As always, this year’s “Guide” features many familiar faces of the people who live, work and make their home in Brandon. I encourage you to take some time to page through the “2013 Brandon Community Guide.” Who knows, you might learn something about Brandon that you didn’t know before or you just may see your smiling face on one of the pages.
Challenger is 7-time SDNA award winner
While the Brandon Valley Challenger and its minimal editorial staff – Alica P. Thiele and myself – didn’t garner any first place awards in this year’s South Dakota Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper contest, I am happy to report that we did capture seven awards, either a second or third place award.
The Challenger, which competes in the 1,150 to 2,000 circulaton category, took second place in General Excellence. The Challenger also scored a second place award for its annual Progress Tab.
Individually, I won five awards: a second place for headline writing, and third place for best news story, local humorous column, feature photo and a sports photo.
Relay for Life team meeting
A late notice for a team meeting for the Relay For Life of Brandon Valley-Garretson is planned for 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7 in the BVHS Community Room. The meeting is open to anyone wanting more information about the June 14-15 event.
Community organization needs
This week’s needs at the Brandon Area Food Pantry are disposable razors, paper towels, bottled juice, pizza sauce, baking supplies and cookie mixes. Before donating, please check the expiration date, as expired food items cannot be distributed. Monetary donations are always appreciated.
The BAFP is located at 406 Main Ave., and is open from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. To donate to the food pantry or for more information, call 582-7001.
The Brandon Lions Club also wants your aluminum cans. Proceeds from the sale of aluminum funds requests to the Club for vision and hearing impairment needs.
The Lions Club collection shed is located in the Sunshine Foods parking lot.
