Congratulations to all those honored at the 19th Annual Teacher of the Year, Retirement and Recognition Banquet. Nearly 200 people attended the dinner and the district awarded years of service awards to 41 staff members. Bill Miller claimed the prize for most years at 45! Also honored were the 16 retirees that have cumulative years of service of over 360 years!
The Teacher of the Year, sponsored by The First National Bank in Sioux Falls, was also announced having been chosen from a wonderful group of nominees. Allen Hogie from the Brandon Valley High School math department was named Teacher of the Year and Jill Flint (3rd grade at Brandon Elementary) and Mark Stadem (BVHS science) were the finalists. Other well-qualified candidates included Patrick Donelan (BVHS industrial technology), Jeff Duncanson (physical education at Brandon Elementary), Paula Hahn (BVMS English and foreign language), Vicki Jelsma (4th grade at Valley Springs Elementary), Ed Murtha (BVMS math), and Michael Zerr (BVMS science). Congratulations go to all the nominees!
On another note, the last day of school is quickly approaching and the school board has approved a change in the make-up days that makes May 23 the last day of classes. Students will be released one hour early that day.
And on still another note, the proposed 2013-14 budget was presented at the May 13 school board meeting by Paul Lundberg, business manager. Patrons can watch the presentation on local cable or at the district’s website under the “School Board” tab.
The official budget is adopted at the July board meeting. A public hearing will precede the meeting so the board can hear input from the public. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 8.
