Todd Geerdes said the Lady Lynx golf team got a lesson in how quickly scores can change on a challenging course like Willow Run in Sioux Falls.

Early on in the round, the Lynx girls found themselves challenged by several hazards, which led to a team high of 24 penalty strokes.

“To put it in the words of Macy Clark, ‘I found every hazard on the back 9,’ ” Geerdes said.

“I was proud that the girls didn’t give up and battled their way through the round with a good second half.”

Brandon Valley’s best effort came from Kaila Kuehn, who continued with her consistent play and a score of 92 – the best round of her prep career – in the 18-hole round.

“Kaila really had an opportunity to shoot in the mid to upper 80’s and I look for her to put together some good scores as we head down the home stretch of our season, which culminates with the state meet in Yankton (Hillcrest Country Club),” Geerdes said.

Alana Christianson and Janae Paul finished one stroke apart. Christianson carded a 96 (two consecutive rounds of 48) and Paul came in with a 97, carding a 45 on the back nine.

Hannah Johnson’s 103 rounds out the team score and last place team finish in the 10-team event.

Macy Clark posted a 113 and Elise Oren finished with 135.

Despite the setback on the challenging Willow Run course, Geerdes remains optimistic as the team heads into their last meets before the May 20-21 state competition.

“We still have a chance to really cut down on the number of putts and chips per round, and if we do that, most of these girls can still trim another 8-10 strokes off their scores just by putting in a little extra time on the practice green,” Geerdes said. “We are getting closer and closer to achieving our team goal of 360. Taking out the 24 penalty strokes and the 13 extra putts we would have accomplished this goal with a score of 358 today. Hopefully we can work closer to that goal at Brookings on Thursday and accomplish that goal at the ESD tournament in Yankton.”

The Lynx are scheduled to face Sioux Falls Roosevelt May 8 and will host the Lynx Invite on Thursday, May 16, with tee off scheduled for noon.
