More than 100 strokes separated Brandon Valley from this year’s Eastern South Dakota Conference champions, the Lady Gov’s from Pierre Riggs. Pierre tallied a 329 team score, while Brandon Valley finished in last place with 436 strokes.

Lynx head coach Todd Geerdes summed up the rollercoaster day, “The girls had an up and down day today.”

Brandon Valley’s best effort came from underclassman Alana Christianson, who carded rounds of 46 and 45, landing her in a tie for 16th place.

“Alana continues to get better and better,” Geerdes said. Once again, Christianson posted the lowest tournament score of her prep career.

Kaila Kuehn turned in another consistent performance. Kuehn fired back-to-back 47s for a 94 and tie for 21st place.

“This is a good time or the year to post your best career or nearly best scores of your career,” said Geerdes.

Janae Paul had some struggles on Fox Run Golf Course, posting a score of 108. But Geerdes said Paul is a better golfer than she showed Monday.

“She has the potential to be a medalist in the state meet as she proved last year by posting a career best 178 in the two-day meet to finish in 25th, and I have the confidence that she will practice with a purpose and return to that form by the state meet,” the coach said.

Much to Hannah Johnson’s misfortune, she was disqualified when given an improper ruling on three drops by her marker.

Despite the setback, Geerdes said the incident served a purpose.

“This did allow us to have a good teaching moment as a team,” he said.

Brandon Valley’s final two golfers, Elise Oren and Lauren Blue, both freshmen, gained valuable experience at the conference competition. Oren carded a 153 and Blue shot a 143.

Mitchell’s Kristin Sabers was the meet medalist. She finished with a 69.

“Hopefully we can build on the positives from today leading into the state tournament next week at Hillcrest Country Club in Yankton.”

Brandon Valley hosts the Lynx Invite this Thursday at the Brandon Municipal Golf Course. Play is scheduled to start at noon. It’s the final competition for the team before the Class AA State Tournament at Hillcrest Country Club in Yankton on Monday and Tuesday, May 20-21.
