Brandon Valley squeaked out a 5-4 victory over the Yankton Bucks Tuesday on their home courts in Brandon, and then suffered an 8-1 setback by Mitchell in the follow-up.

“We squeaked this match out and it came down to our doubles again,” said Lynx head coach Mark Schlekeway. “I was a little disappointed that we didn’t take care of business during singles.”

The team dual came down to Brandon Valley’s Flight 3 doubles pulling out a tight match in a come-from-behind win. Cooper Baltzer and Lucas Mutschelknaus held on to win the tightlycontested 11-10 (8-6) match.

“We talked a lot about how we have to get more aggressive in doubles and I thought that paid off during this match,” Schelkeway said.

Billy Trevillyan (Flight 1 singles) was the lone Lynx to register two victories on the day.
In the team’s opener against Yankton, the sophomore defeated Luke Rockne 10-2. He defeated Mitchell’s Jacob Cerosimo by that same margin.

Also posting wins against Yankton were Drake Van Egdom (flight 2 singles) and Lucas Mutschelknaus (Flight 6 singles). Van Egdom blanked Ben Jensen 10-0 and Mutschelknaus handed Paul Fanta a 10-3 loss.

The Mitchell Kernels proved to be a force not to be reckoned with Tuesday.

“They lived up to what I have been hearing from other coaches,” Schlekeway said.
“They are a good team this year that is still fairly young … (and) will be good for the next three or four years. You could say that Mitchell dominated us at all spots other than Flight 1 singles. “Billy beat a good Jacob Cersosimo player and made it look easy,” the coach said.

The win and loss on Tuesday put the Lynx at 8-6 on the season, which is coming to a close this weekend at the May 16-18 Class AA State Tournament, which will be played in Sioux Falls and Brandon.
