The Lynx got a bit of “schooling” in the game of tennis Thursday when Rapid City Stevens handed Brandon Valley an 8-1 setback.
“Stevens is a good team that has a chance to place high at state next week,” said Lynx head coach Mark Schlekeway.
Brandon Valley’s only win of the day came from sophomore Billy Trevillyan.
Schlekeway coined Trevillyan’s hard fought 11-9 victory as “the match of the day.”
“We knew going in that this was going to be a great match and it definitely lived up to that,” he said. “Billy made some uncharacteristic mistakes but he kept his cool and pulled it out in the end.”
Schlekeway said Trevillyan’s victory could prove to be beneficial when seedings are made for this week’s state tournament. “It should put Billy in good shape to receive a top 5 seed,” the coach said.
The other close match of the day was at Flight 3 doubles. The Lynx duo of Cooper Baltzer and Lucas Mutschelknaus fell short in the 10-4 loss to Sean Feenan and Trae Olson.
“This doubles team keeps improving and it has been fun watching them grow as a team this year,” Schlekeway said.
The Lynx will compete for the Class AA title Thursday through Saturday on courts in Sioux Falls and Brandon.
“As a team we need to get better about taking chances against the great teams and I think we learned that tonight. It is tough to stay back and try to win points from the baseline against the good teams.
