One of Brandon’s oldest establishments has new ownership.
Mark Fonder, who also owns 212 The Boiling Point in Brandon, and Krav’n in Sioux Falls, now owns a trio of pubs, that includes the Double D Saloon. He took ownership May 1 from Corey DeVille.
Fonder said he’ll be able to stage more events at the Main Avenue business than he’s able to at 212.
“I can do a lot more with live music and events here,” he said. “212 is limited on space and this has a lot more room and a patio.”
Patrons of the Double D Saloon shouldn’t expect too many changes. Fonder said the big changes taking place now are happening behind the bar. New coolers will be installed in the coming weeks.
“I still want to keep it a local hangout,” said the 38-year-old, “but the changes will make it more bartender-friendly.”
Fonder said improvements are also planned for the 21-and-over bar’s exterior but won’t be addressed immediately.
Monica Nelson, assistant at the Brandon Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, anticipates Fonder will do well in his second business endeavor in Brandon.
“He’s made 212 a successful business and I expect he’ll do the same at the Double D,” she said.
Fonder has a seven-year business history in Brandon. In 2007, he and former partner Katie Thill
purchased Sneaker’s Tavern, which was located above Family Floors and Furniture, from Todd Schneiderman. They later moved the business to Splitrock Square, renaming it 212 The Boiling Point.
Fonder said he has no plans to change the name of the Double D Saloon.
Fonder remembers a payroll of four to five employees when he first opened Sneakers. Today, he has between 80 and 90 employees on the payroll. Melissa Bennett is the manager for 212 and the Double D.
Good customer service has been Fonder’s trademark to business success.
“The biggest thing is trying to give good customer service,” he said, “and make it a friendly atmosphere so they come back.”
Patrons will want to come back to the Double D to take part in the seasonal pool and dart leagues, Friday night karaoke and live bands on Friday and Saturday evenings.
The Double D is also a participant in the yearlong poker run to benefit Cure Kids Cancer that culminates with a card drawing Sept. 14 at the Double D. About 65 bars from Madison to Crooks and Salem are participating in the poker run.
