Lynx crack top 10 at boy's state tennis meet

Brandon Valley brought home a consolation doubles title and two individual place winners from last week’s Class AA State Boys Tennis Tournament. Those placings, along with a variety of match wins, allowed the Lynx to crack the top-10 for a second time in two seasons. Brandon Valley, which captured eighth in 2013, finished in a two-way tie for ninth with Sioux Falls Roosevelt. The Watertown Arrows were the team champs.

“Obviously, we wanted to be in the top 10,” said Lynx head coach Mark Schlekeway. “With losing all of those players from last year, this was definitely an achievement.”

The Lynx No. 2 doubles team of Tanner Wehrkamp and Drake Van Egdom suffered a first round loss, but battled back through the consolation bracket to win the title. But the title didn’t come easily, as Madison’s Green and Shan took the Lynx duo to the limit in the 11-10(4) match.

Schlekeway said the duo’s consolation title was somewhat a surprise.

“They went through a rough patch at the end of the season,” he said. “But we needed every match on Saturday to finish in ninth, and that was one of the matches that allowed us to do that.”

Flight 1 singles player, sophomore Billy Trevillyan, and Flight 6 singles, junior Lucas Mutschelknaus, claimed fifth and third, respectively.

Trevillyan opened the tourney with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Roosevelt’s Logan Barr before suffering a 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-3 setback by Rapid City Stevens’ James Ferrier. He advanced in the tournament when Brookings’ Baylor Dobbs was pulled from the tournament due to illness, which placed the Lynx underclassmen in the fifth place mach against St. Thomas More’s Daniel Duffy, which Trevillyan handled in the 10-4 win.

“It was fun to see Billy, even against Stevens, play at such a high level,” Schlekeway said. “We’ve always known he has the skill but he grew so much mentally in his game this year, and I look for great things from him.”

Mutschelknaus breezed through his first two matches, a 6-1, 6-0 win over Madison’s Logan Jager and a pair of 6-3 sets against O’Gorman’s Ramzi Maluf. He was upset by Mitchell’s Brenden Lehr, 7-5, 6-3, which positioned him for the third place match against Washington’s Cole Benson. The Lynx junior had the edge in the 10-4 win.

“Lucas has gotten better as the season went on and has become a consistent, good player,” Schlekeway said.

Schlekeway, who was promoted to assistant high school principal earlier this year, has coached the Lynx for 10 seasons, closes out his coaching career this year. He hands over a program that’s been on the rise for several seasons.

“I’m very happy with where ended things,” he said. “We had a great state tournament for an inexperienced group.”

The Lynx graduate just two seniors from the program: Wehrkamp and Austin Sadler.

“I appreciate everything they’ve done. They did a good job of leading the team, and not just on the court,” he said.
