Celebrate. Remember. Fight back.
Cancer takes center stage at 2nd annual Relay for Life of BV-Garretson

Holidays from throughout the year will be celebrated at the second annual Relay for Life of Brandon Valley-Garretson Friday evening well into the early morning hours of Saturday.

“Take a Holiday From Cancer” is the theme of this year’s event designed to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those who lost their battle to cancer, and to fight back by bringing awareness to the vast disease.

A favorite holiday for one of the 14 teams registered for this year’s Relay is “Black Friday,” shares co-chairwoman Brenda Feltman.

“We encourage teams to set up their campsite around their favorite holiday, and I’m curious to see what people will do,” she said.

As of late last week, Feltman said 14 teams were registered for the event, which is down one team from the inaugural Relay for Life of BV-Garretson. But Feltman is optimistic more teams will sign on before Friday.

“I’ve had two phone calls this week from people who are interested in having a team,” she said. “And last year, we had one team show up on the day of the event.”

A committee of about 15 began planning the 2013 event shortly after last year’s Relay wrapped up.

“For us, it’s almost constant planning,” Feltman said.

And that “constant planning” is what Feltman and the committee hope will draw more people to participate, to volunteer, to attend or to donate to the cause.

“Cancer never sleeps and it’s not convenient,” she said, “so that’s why we are going to stay up (all night) with those cancer survivors and fighters.”

Throughout the event, at least one member from each team will be walking on the track at all times. Overnight Olympics will also help to keep teams inspired. Games such as turkey bowling, frozen t-shirt relay and tug-of-war are planned. “Crazy things like that,” Feltman said.

Teams are invited to begin setting up their campsite at 3 p.m. Friday. Tony’s Catering will start serving at 5 p.m. and the opening ceremonies/Survivor Victory Lap is scheduled for 6 p.m. Entertainment and games will run 6:30 to 9 p.m., at which time the Luminaria Ceremony will begin. The Zoomobile will also be on site 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a silent auction is also part of the festivities.

All cancer survivors who register Friday will be given a complimentary Relay for Life t-shirt and a free meal, compliments of Tony’s Catering, Feltman said.

“People can just show up, they don’t have to be part of a team,” Feltman said. “We invite the public to come see what it’s all about.”

Feltman said teams may register throughout this week or on the day of the event. She said teams should be limited to 15 members, and each team is asked to raise a minimum of $100. A free t-shirt will be given to each member who raise $100 or more.

Luminarias ($10 each) will be available on the day of the event until 8:30 p.m. or throughout the week by contacting Feltman at 201-6039. The decorated luminaries will light up the track for the Luminaria Ceremony at 9 p.m.

Last year, a total of 385 luminaries lined the track, Feltman said.
