Mariah Logan stages bean bag tourney to grant wishes

Since her crowning as Miss South Dakota International last September, Mariah Logan has made various parade appearances, volunteered at Hot Harley Nights and judged a ‘Womanless’ pageant in Harrisburg.
Now, she’s staging a bean bag tournament in support of her platform, South Dakota’s Make-A-Wish Foundation. Bean Bag Madness is planned for the evening of Friday, June 21, at McHardy Park.
As the sister of a Make-A-Wish grantee, Logan knows firsthand the benefits of the program.
“Having been a sister of a Make-A-Wish child, this was an easy and obvious choice for me,” said the 20-year-old from Brandon. “This event will allow me to give back to the Foundation as well as involve my very own hometown of Brandon.”
Eleven years ago, brother Paul was diagnosed with Burkitt’s lymphoma, and the Logan family was gifted a trip to the Master’s Golf Tournament at Augusta National.
“Ever since (Paul’s) had clear results,” Logan happily reports.
Logan said it was brother Paul who suggested staging a bean bag tournament to raise both funds and awareness for Make-A-Wish. “I’m trying to have it be very community-based,” she said, “and ultimately, my goal is to raise money to support a Make-A-Wish child and sponsor their wish.”
An average “Wish” costs between $5,000 and $7,000.
“I’m hoping to get at least $1,000 to make a dent in it,” Logan said.
Since her crowning as Miss S.D. International, Logan has granted three wishes to South Dakota children and their families.
“It’s probably been the best experience so far of my year because I have such a personal connection,” she said.
The state Miss International pageant was Logan’s first pageant endeavor ever.
“I’m still learning a lot about it since I don’t have that much experience,” she said. “I’m looking into things I need to work on, like interviewing and communicating with people, and planning this event has helped with this a lot.”
Next month, Logan and her parents, Bob and Wanda, will travel to Chicago for the weeklong Miss International pageant, which starts July 20.
Logan said she was drawn to the Miss International pageant because it isn’t based on beauty. Instead, contestants compete in interview, evening gown, fitness wear and fun fashion.
She’s chosen a white evening gown for that portion of the contest.
“I’ve heard white wins,” she said.
And an acquaintance from Hartford has designed her a one-of-a-kind dress constructed out of newspaper.
“I’m learning a lot about myself and definitely a lot about money, in cutting corners or finding deals,” she said. “But really, this is just about the experience, and personally, I’m already taking a lot from that.”
To fund her upcoming pageant expenses, Logan has been working two jobs, one of which is at Sioux Falls-based Oh! My Cupcakes, where she first saw the flyer advertising the Miss South Dakota International pageant opportunity.
“I’ve also received some donations in the mail, and that’s a tremendous blessing because I’m a college kid,” she said, adding her parents have been very supportive as well. Logan is a junior hospitality management major at South Dakota State University.
“It’s been a struggle just because I have dedicated a lot of time and my own money, and I probably have a small chance of winning because there are a lot of other women in the pageant doing awesome things,” she said. “But I know this is an experience I will never get again, so I’m definitely going to make it worth my while. And one day all of this is going to prepare me for my career in event planning.”
