Brandon native is new Bethel coach
Brandon native Doug Novak was announced June 4 as the coach of the Bethel (Minn.) University men’s basketball team.
The 190 University of Tennessee grad was an NCAA Division I assistant the past seven seasons – the first four at The Citadel and the last three at Tulane.
He was a head coach at Iowa Western Community College from 1995-98 and at Anderson (S.C.) University from 1999-2006.
Lincoln girls basketball coach resigns
Lincoln girls basketball coach Lyle Pearson confirmed on Friday that he has resigned after five years of coaching the Patriots, including a Class AA state title this past season.
Pearson said upon taking over the girls program in 2008 that he gave himself a five-year window and would re-evaluate from there. The final result was a 17-8 record last season and the Pats’ first-ever state basketball title.
Pearson, who also coached the Lincoln boys basketball team for 18 seasons, including a state championship in 1995, will stay on as the boys golf coach in the fall. The Patriots are the defending ‘AA’ boys golf champions.
Padres scout to direct tryout camps
San Diego Padres coach Hank Krause will be directing tryout camps June 19 in Akron, Iowa, and June 26 in Clear Lake. Both start at 9 a.m. Players should be ages 15-20 and they must provide their own gloves, shoes and uniforms. Other scouts and a number of college coaches will be in attendance.
