Brandon water tower has new paint job

Workers from McGuire Iron, the company contracted to refurbish Brandon’s water tower, put the finishing touches on it last week just in time for Friday’s Automania event, when thousands upon thousands of people visited the city
The $272,500 project took longer than planned due to rainy weather conditions this spring and unplanned repairs.

Once McGuire Iron staff began work on the water tower, they discovered multiple holes in the tower’s roof. In addition, the original construction of the tank was not welded at the seams on the tank’s interior. Jon Brown, city engineer, said the interior seams would’ve continued to rust if the seams had not been addressed.

Company workers also sandblasted and painted the water tower, including painting the town’s name and logo.

Prior to this, the 1971 water tower and had seven coats of paint on it, city Administrator Bryan Read said. The exterior has been painted within the last 10 years, but the paint had started to flake in recent years.

“We found in the last painting that it’s the paint underneath that’s causing the problems,” Read said. “That’s why we needed to sandblast it down to the bare metal.”
