School Resource Officer restored to 5 days a week

July 12. 2013 9:28AM
The School Resource Officer program between the City of Brandon and the Brandon Valley School District is being restored to five days a week for the coming school year. During the budget reductions that were necessitated by reduced state funding for K-12 education the SRO program was cut back to four days per week. This valuable collaboration between the City and the District is an important part of efforts to keep our school and community safe.

The SRO is assigned a primary duty station at Brandon Valley High School, but serves all the schools in the district. Sergeant Wade Else has been assigned to the SRO duties and has established great relationships with students and staff throughout the district. His service not only helps protect student safety in the district, but also his investigative skills help solve issues that affect the school and the community as a whole.

The Brandon City Council has approved the agreement and the Brandon Valley School Board will be asked to follow suit with an approval at its July 11th meeting. The district appreciates the cooperation of the City in making this program a continuing success for the students and community. The district will be paying $40,000 toward the program for the 2013-14 school year and the City will assume any other associated costs for the officer during non-school days during the year. The district thanks Bryan Read, Chief Kull and the Council for their support.
