Alec Finch drove in the go-ahead run to give Valley Springs Post 131 the lead in the sixth inning of American Legion baseball action, to hang on to beat Mitchell 5-2 on Tuesday.
With the score tied at two, Finch came to the plate and singled.
“We’ve had trouble with those guys,” said Post 131 head coach Grant Hieb.
Jared Mulder had a hot bat for Post 131. Mulder went 3-for-4, drove in one and scored one run. He singled in the first, fifth and seventh innings.
Mitchell couldn’t get anything going as long as Jacob Bruget was on the mound.
Mitchell managed just two hits off of the Valley Springs pitcher, who allowed two earned runs, walked six and struck out six during his 6 2/3 innings of work.
He was relieved by Luke Bauske in the seventh.
“Both Bruget and Bauske threw well,” Hieb said.
In the top of the first, Mitchell grabbed the early lead, 2-0. A single by Josh Schmidt, plating Lakin Neugebauer started the inning off. Mitchell pushed more runs across when Schmidt scored on a bases loaded walk.
Post 131 scored one run in each of the first, fifth and sixth. In the first, Valley Springs scored on a sacrifice fly by Tommy Gardner, bringing home Nic Peterson.
Valley Springs built upon its lead with two runs in the seventh. Mulder singled, scoring Jacob Adams to start the inning. That was followed up with Mulder stealing home.
Valley Springs, now 17-17 overall, sits at 4-2 in region play, with two region games remaining.
