FCA flag football will be played at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evenings beginning Aug. 27 through Oct. 8 at Aspen Park, 304 Main Ave. The program is for boys and girls entering grades 1-4.
Players in fifth and sixth grade can play in the Sioux Falls league.
Register at www.southdakotafca.org. Cost is $125 per player. Late registrations may be emailed to email@example.com.
The goal of the FCA Flag Football program is build godly young men through their love for the game of football. The program was formed in 2002 to provide an alternative to junior full contact football and to offer a sports specific ministry to community youth while teaching the fundamentals of football and challenging young athletes and coaches to follow Christ.
In 2002, the program had 70 players and eight teams in Sioux Falls. Because of increasing numbers, FCA launched a Brandon league two years ago, with nearly 500 kids and 100 coaches participating. FCA has also partnered with the National Football League’s flag football league, which gives each player their own NFL journey.
Before each game, speakers share topical sports-themed messages based on weekly scripture verse that the players learn and recite in their post-game huddles. Speakers consist of former and current athletes as well as coaches from the community who share their testimonies and a faith-based message.
Augustana College to host youth basketball tourney
Augustana College will host the Mid-America Youth Basketball (MAYB) Tournament scheduled for July 12-14 in the Elmen Center.
More than 90 teams of 4th to 12th grade boys and girls will participate in this three-day tournament.
A highlight of the event will be the Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ Nite of Champions on Saturday, July 13, featuring a barbeque pork banquet that'’s free for players and coaches. Parents and families are invited to make a free-will offering. Sponsored by the FCA, and the South Dakota Pork Producers, Saturday’s banquet will be served between 4:45 and 5:30 p.m. The featured speaker will be Stickney native Alan Miller, a two-time All-American and second all-time scorer in South Dakota history, who will share a witness of his Christian faith.
Following Miller’s message, youth participants will take part in a 3-point shootout and a slam-dunk contest.
“We bring in a Christian speaker to share the love of Jesus Christ to those participating in this weekend. We believe that there is a platform to share your faith at an event as simple and ordinary as a basketball tournament,” said Carmen Hecht, a member of the organizing committee.
