Son joins father in Brandon chiropractic business

A Brandon chiropractic clinic is gaining another doctor bearing the same last name.
Dr. Charles Ward, 27, has joined his father’s 23-year-old practice, Ward Chiropractic Health Care Center.

“The fact that he’s going to carry on chiropractic in our family is pretty neat,” says his father, Dr. David Ward. “And it’s real exciting, as he brings so much more to the dynamics of the practice.”

And later this year, Ward Chiropractic will add a third doctor to the practice – also bearing the same last name. Paige (Buekelman) Ward, 25, a Brandon native and wife of Dr. Charles of four years, will graduate from Palmer College of Chiropractic this October.

Trained in echocardiography and working a year in that setting, Paige Ward decided she, too, wanted to become a chiropractor.

“I didn’t imagine when we moved down there (Davenport, Iowa) that I would come back a chiropractor,” she said.

Just days after the couple returned to the area about three weeks ago, Dr. Charles Ward began seeing cash patients. He’s currently dealing with the paperwork for being an insurance provider.

“It’s a process,” he said. “They don’t just let you graduate and start taking care of people.”

Dr. David Ward says his son joins the practice at a critical time. “I’m at a point during the day when I’ve seen enough patients and can’t see any more.”

Not wanting to turn anyone way, all new patients coming to the clinic will be seen by Dr. Charles Ward.

Joining his father in his business wasn’t always the plan, Charles said. But a love for family drew the couple home.

“I love my family,” Charles tells. “That’s a big reason, along with the communities around here.” He’s a graduate of Garretson High School and Paige is a 2006 Brandon Valley High grad.

“The Brandon-Sioux Falls-Garretson area is a great place to raise a family,” he said, which is important, as they are expecting their first child in late August.

Dr. Charles Ward graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic last October. He also possesses a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and chemistry from the University of Sioux Falls.

Dr. Charles didn’t always want to follow in his father’s footsteps.

“I actually wanted to be an astronaut until the fourth or fifth grade,” he said. “Then I realized I needed a more realistic career, and ever since high school, I knew that this is what I wanted to do.”

So he turned to a career that was his main healthcare as a child, he said.

“If I had a headache or felt like a cold was coming on, I had my dad adjust me and those symptoms would go away,” he said.

He wants others to turn to chiropractic care first for these kinds of symptoms as well.

“In a perfect world, in a mega perfect world, people would start off with chiropractic care and see how their conditions progress,” he said. “I think nowadays people are looking at something different for their health care … and people are a little more open-minded these days.”
A new program Dr. Charles plans to introduce to the community is “Walk With the Doc. The program will take place after the clinic closes for the day. Community members are then invited to take a 20 to 30-minute walk with Dr. Ward.
“My patients have been the focus throughout my undergrad and even my graduate program,” Dr. Charles said. “They drove me to be the best doctor that I can be for them.”
He also specializes in Kinesio Taping, largely used by athletes to help with inflamed muscles.
Paige Ward will specialize in pediatric chiropractic care and treating pregnant women.
“A lot of people don’t realize how important it is. With pregnancy there are so many changes going on the body,” Paige Ward said. Data shows that chiropractic care can decrease delivery time and pain, she said.

Dr. David Ward says the addition of his son to the practice provides him a peace of mind.

“If anything would ever happen to me, I know that my patients would be taken care of the way I would want them to be taken care of,” he said.

The Wards also look to having a freestanding clinic in the future with larger adjustment rooms and a therapy area, Dr. David Ward said.

“The biggest dream is to have a wellness center attached to it … to help people stay fit and healthy,” he said.
