Valley Springs edges Brookings, tops Yankton

Both Valley Springs and Brookings American Legion teams put runners aboard on Tuesday, but it was the home team that was able to take advantage, pulling out a 5-4 win at Legion Park in Valley Springs.

Brookings got eight hits compared with just six for Post 131, but Brookings stranded six on base.

Jacob Adams got on base three times in the game for Post 131. He scored one run and had two RBIs, homering in the third inning.

Tommy Gardner worked out of 10 tough spots for Valley Springs. He pitched four innings and allowed one earned run on three hits. Gardner faced his most difficult moment in the eighth inning.

Derek Johnson got it done on the hill on the way to a win. He allowed three runs over five innings. He struck out one, walked none and surrendered five hits.

In the bottom of the first, Valley Springs grabbed the early 2-0 lead. A double by Nic Peterson, plating Cole VanderBeek started the inning off. More runs came home for Valley Springs when Peterson scored on a groundout by Jared Mulder.

Brookings tallied one run in each of the second, third, fifth and eighth innings. In the second, Brookings scored on a groundout by Konner Beste, scoring Thomas McMacken.

Brookings tied the game in the third on an RBI single by Corey Roach that scored Peutz.

Valley Springs never trailed after scoring two runs in the third on a two-run home run by Adams.

Brookings scored one run in the top of the fifth to cut its deficit to one. A sacrifice fly by Skylar Cary fueled Brookings’ comeback before Thomas grounded out to end the Brookings threat.

Valley Springs scored one run of its own in the fifth on a walk by Gardner.

After pushing across one run in the top of the eighth, Brookings faced just a 5-4 deficit. An RBI single by Peterson gave Brookings life. Finally, Gardner induced an inning-ending strike out from Mack Burns.

VS 10, Yankton 5
Valley Springs Post 131 and Yankton passed the lead back and forth five times on Wednesday at Yankton, but in the end Valley Springs pulled out a 10-5 win.

Post 131 finally managed to grab the lead after a strong sixth inning, scoring on an RBI single by Lucas Lunstra off Landon Withrow, scoring Jacob Adams.

Adams racked up three RBIs on two hits for Valley Springs. He singled in the sixth inning and homered in the seventh.

Luke Bauske got the win for Post 131. He allowed one run over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out four, walked three and surrendered four hits.

Post 131 jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The rally was started when Nic Peterson singled. A passed ball then moved Peterson from first to second.
Yankton scored one run of its own in the first on a sacrifice fly by Mitch Gullikson.

After posting two runs in the second, Yankton again scored two in the ninth. In the second, the host teams scored on a two-run single by Lane Sawatzke, plating Zach Benjamin and Andrew Hummel.

Valley Springs didn’t give up the lead after the sixth inning. Additional runs came from two sacrifice flies and an RBI single by Adams.

Post 131 brought home two runs in the seventh inning, and matched that run total in the ninth. In the seventh, Valley Springs scored on a two-run home run by Adams, bringing home Cole VanderBeek. Post 131 added two more runs in the top of the ninth. A ground out scored Adams for the inning’s first run. That was followed up by Lunstra’s single, plating Derek Johnson.
