Summer’s heat takes toll on this party planner

Last fall when I signed on for the Brandon Valley Challenger to host a Chamber mixer in July, it never occurred to me the mixer would be scheduled for the hottest day of the year to date.

Nor did I give thought to the office air conditioning going on the blink that same day.

But despite the longtime in place party plans, that’s exactly what I was faced with last week. I cringed as the weatherman announced that temperatures were heading toward the 100-degree mark, and, oh, yeah, don’t forget about the added humidity Mother Nature was promising as well.

But hey, this event was going to be indoors – air-conditioned indoors – or so I thought.
A few hours before my Chamber guests were scheduled to arrive, the office felt “stuffy” so I did what comes naturally, I turned the thermostat down to Alaskan-tundra temps. The quick turn of the thermostat, however, did little to rectify the situation.

That’s when I marched my problem down to the building’s owner, who put in a service call and sent me away with a commercial-sized fan. While the fan circulated the air, it wasn’t keeping this Chamber mixer hostess “cool as a cucumber” by any means.
But the heat of the day proved to be the least of my problems.

A bigger issue I faced was “leftovers” – and plenty of them.

For a few weeks leading up to the mixer, I kept a keen eye on the local grocery ads for items that I needed to serve walking tacos with all the fixings. The problem is when planning a Chamber mixer, you’re never sure just how many will show up. So, following the lead of Tony’s Catering, I wasn’t going to run short of anything – and I didn’t.

Since the mixer, I’ve eaten a variety of lettuce salads and an assortment of tacos. I’ve tossed chopped up onions, black olives and tomatoes into side dishes and an omelet. I’ve frozen some of the extra taco meat and shredded cheese and given away bowls of lettuce. And yet, there’s still more lettuce in the bowl calling my fork and I.

With the weather, broken down air conditioning and a plethora of food, you must be wondering if I’ll tackle another Chamber in the future.

I will. But it likely won’t be for another year or so. By then, that taco meat should surely be gone.
Community organization needs
This week’s needs at the Brandon Area Food Pantry are Pasta Sides (noodles only), pizza sauce, jam and/or jelly, boxed pasta (i.e. rotini, penne, elbow macaroni), paper plates, napkins, paper towels and Kleenex. Before donating, please check the expiration date, as expired food items cannot be distributed. Monetary donations are always appreciated.

The BAFP is located at 406 Main Ave., and is open from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. To donate to the food pantry or for more information, call 582-7001.

The Brandon Lions Club also wants your aluminum cans. Proceeds from the sale of aluminum funds requests to the Club for vision and hearing impairment needs.

The Lions Club collection shed is located in the Sunshine Foods parking lot.
