BASA asks for high school soccer to be sanctioned

With dozens and dozens of high school students who play soccer filling the rear of the meeting room, representatives from the Brandon Area Soccer Association asked for the high school programs to be sanctioned.

BASA made their first request last November, but budget constraints kept the Brandon Valley Board of Education from sanctioning the program. It's estimated it would cost the district $40,000 annually to field high school varsity and junior varsity soccer for both boys and girls. About 70 students are involved this year.

BASA also offered the five-year transition option, where the club organization would help with expenses over the next five years, with the district taking full ownership of the programs at that time.

South Dakota State Soccer Association, which organizes Brandon Valley's soccer programs in cooperation with BASA and oversees the state club tournaments, is disbanding the high school program after the 2014 season. The South Dakota High School Association sanctioned the sport, beginning with the 2012 season.

If the Board opts not to sanction the sport, the fate of the high school program could be in jeopardy following the conclusion of the 2014 season.

The Board will have further discussion on the proposal prior to putting the 2015-16 budget together, which begins in January.
