Lawrence Spencer, 75
Funeral services for Lawrence H. Spencer, 75, of Sioux Falls, were held Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at First Christian Church.
Mr. Spencer died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, following a long battle with rheumatoid arthritis and COPD, surrounded by his family.
Lawrence Harold Spencer was born Dec. 21, 1937 in Sioux Falls to Harold and Tressa (Farr) Spencer. He grew up in Sioux Falls and after graduating from Washington High he attended Augustana College. Larry served in the Air National Guard from 1950 to 1969.
On Jan. 10, 1959, he was united in marriage to Karen Doggett in Sioux Falls. The couple made their home there, where they owned and operated Spencer Furniture. He loved his work and believed in offering quality merchandise at a fair price, and service to the customer.
He was member of First Christian Church, being Elder Emeritus, as well as serving in many areas of the church for many years. Larry enjoyed family time at the cabin at Lake Madison, hunting, fishing, and water skiing. He loved animals and particularly his dogs. Above all, he loved his family and continued to guide them through his illness.
He is survived by his wife Karen; children, Susan (Dennis) Mantz, Sioux Falls, Shelly (Ronald) Tibke, Dell Rapids, Harold (Laura) Spencer, Brandon, and Stephanie (Michael) Jones, Sioux Falls; grandchildren, Anne and Paul Mantz, Kelsey (Tyler) Fischer, Kyle Tibke, Peyton, Sydney and Mia Jones, Danielle and Rachael Spencer; great-granddaughter, Marley Mantz; nephews, Randy and Rodney Jonason; niece Sylvia Jonason; and many cousins in the area and Indiana, and finally yet importantly his faithful companion, Josie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Norma Jonason.
Miller Funeral Home, Sioux Falls, was in charge of arrangements.
Dorisa Young, 37
Funeral services for Dorisa Young, 37, of Brandon, were held Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at Faith United Presbyterian Church in Brandon. Interment was in the Tyndall Cemetery in Tyndall.
Dorisa died Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Dorisa Marie Young was born Nov. 26, 1975 in the Gregory Hospital, Gregory. She lived in Burke, Gregory, Mitchell, Sioux Falls and Brandon. She attended school in Mitchell and Sioux Falls, later completing her school education at the SD School for the Deaf. She went on to obtain an associate degree in graphics communication at Southeast Technical Institute.
Dorisa was a very spirited young lady. She was diagnosed with Nuerofibramatosis Type II at the age of 11. She has been thru 55 surgeries/procedures, but never asked, “Why me, God?”
In 1993 Make-A-Wish granted her wish to go to Disney World. With the help of Make-A-Wish she met many people she never would have, had it not been for the disease. She experienced joy in meeting George Blanda, an NFL Hall of Famer, who she wrote back and forth with until his death; country singer Vince Gill, who sat her on his lap while he sang to her and bought her a new outfit and jewelry; Amy Grant, Charles Barkley (she kissed the top of his bald head), Kris Tschetter, Mike Miller, and many more.
Dorisa is survived by her parents, Doyle and Barbara Young; siblings, Darin (Marcia) Young and Cassandra (Todd) Gardner; nieces and nephews, Brooke and Ian Gardner, and Alaina, Gavin and Hailey Young; and a host of cousins, relative and friends.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Harven and Florance Rueb and Darrel and Helen Young.
Memorial donations may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Awana program at Brandon Valley Baptist Church and Gideon’s International.

Dr. Dan Slaight, 84
Dr. Dan Slaight, 84, De Smet, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, De Smet. A memorial service with military rights will begin at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at American Lutheran Church, De Smet, with Reverend Becky Senner officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Slaight, DeSmet; five children, Robyn (Mike) Coughlin, Brandon, Cheri Slaight, Vicki (Lorre) Colburn, and Shon (Janell) Slaight, all of Sioux Falls, and Kim Slaight, DeSmet; eight grandsons; five granddaughters; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Osthus Funeral Home, De Smet, was in charge of arrangements.
