Dr. Dan Slaight, 84
Dr. Dan Slaight, 84, of De Smet, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, De Smet. A memorial service with military rights was held Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at American Lutheran Church, De Smet.
Dr. Dan Richard Slaight was born Sept. 14, 1928, at Muskogee, Okla., to Clarence and Minnie Roberts Slaight. He graduated from high school in Richardson, Texas, and graduated with a degree in dentistry from the University of Minnesota in 1958.
On July 11, 1953, he married Jean M. Johnson at Slayton, Minn. The couple made their home in De Smet in 1958, where he practiced dentistry for 55 years.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, El Riad Shrine, past President of the De Smet Development Board, served on the De Smet School Board, was instrumental in the development of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Wilderness Trail and the Kingsbury County Country Club and swimming pool. He recently received the Spirit of Community Award for his contributions to De Smet.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Slaight, DeSmet; five children, Robyn (Mike) Coughlin, Brandon, Cheri Slaight, Vicki (Lorre) Colburn, and Shon (Janell) Slaight, all of Sioux Falls, and Kim Slaight, DeSmet; eight grandsons, five granddaughters, and 17 great-grandchildren.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Sanford Cancer Center or the Laura Ingalls Wilder Wilderness Trail, De Smet, SD.
Osthus Funeral Home, De Smet, was in charge of arrangements.
