Lynx golfers settle for third in ESD Conference play

Hillsview Golf Course got the best of the Brandon Valley Lynx at the ESD Conference Meet on Saturday in Pierre.

Poised to repeat as the ESD champs, the Lynx golfers took third in the nine-team competition, finishing 11 strokes behind Yankton (311), this year’s ESD Conference winners, and runner-up Aberdeen Central (319).

“We didn’t play our best golf and left a lot of strokes out there,” is how Lynx head coach Scott Carroll summed up Saturday’s meet. “As a team we figured we would have to shoot 295 to have a chance, but the elements and greens really caused havoc for many players.”

Senior Tanner Fjerestad led the Lynx with a 79. He carded five strokes more than ESD medalist, Yankton’s Jace Guthmiller, who posted a pair of 37s in the 18-hole competition.

Teammate Greg Koehn shot a 79, followed by Riley Duncanson with an 81 and Alex Hamer’s 83. Ryan Sjoberg and Zane Swenson round out the Lynx scores. Sjoberg had a 90 and Swenson finished with at 95.

Both Fjerestad and Koehn made the ESD All-Conference Team.

Carroll said the Lynx had opportunity to stage a three-peat on Saturday. “With the score that Yankton put up, if there was a day to beat Yankton, today was the day,” he said.

With just the Metro Conference and state tournament remaining – both to be played at the Brandon Municipal – Scott and the boys are preparing to redeem themselves, he said.

“Golf is so much more than just swinging and putting,” he said. “The mental aspect is as important as anything else. We have to continue to stay in it even when there is a bad hole (because) that is what is going to get us to the top.”

The Metro Conference was played Tuesday and the Class AA State Tournament tees off at 9 a.m. on both Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 7-8.

“We are excited for the Metro and the state tournament to redeem ourselves and put this behind us,” Scott said. “It is quite an accomplishment to win back to back ESD titles, but once you win a couple you think you should win them all.”
