When Christine Buck turned back to her boyfriend, Bud Windelborn, after taking a quick photo of the Sioux Falls Saturday, she was greeted by a man on his knees holding a ring asking her to marry him.

It was a moment neither of them are likely to forget.

Unbeknownst to the newly engaged couple, Hope Logue of Sioux Falls immortalized the moment through the lens of a camera while shooting senior photos for her roommate’s sister. It was a moment of serendipity that on Monday became a quest to find the happy couple.

“We saw this guy on one knee and this girl crying and I said, ‘I need to take a photo of that’,” Logue said.

Logue, who never had met Buck or Windelborn, posted the photo on Facebook late Sunday with a plea for help finding the couple in her photo.

“I said maybe someday they’ll get it, and they did,” Logue said. “People shared it more than 500 times.”

The couple was led to that rock in Falls Park after a 25-year relationship, according to Windelborn. Buck’s family, originally from Brandon, moved to Sycamore, Ill., during her senior year of high school in 1987. She met Windelborn that year, before graduating.
“We were friends but we went our separate ways,” Windelborn said.

Both Windelborn and Buck married, and each had two children before getting divorced. Then, at their 20-year high school reunion, they reconnected and stayed in contact until Buck moved to Peoria, Ill., close enough to Windelborn’s home in Champaign, Ill., for the pair to begin dating in January.

On Oct. 10, Buck and Windelborn made the trip from Illinois to Brandon so Windelborn could meet Buck’s family and hometown friends. Windelborn said he already had bought the ring and asked his two daughters’ permission to pop the question.

After that, he said, it was just a matter of waiting for the right moment. It arrived on a lazy Saturday visit to Falls Park.

“While we were walking around I was thinking, ‘You know, this is … this is it’,” Windelborn said.

He found a rock and asked Buck whether she would take a photo, and he was waiting on one knee, ring-in-hand, when she turned around.

Buck, who was unavailable for an interview, told Windelborn that she wanted it known that she couldn’t believe he asked her to marry him while she still was in her pajamas.

For Logue, being there to capture Buck and Windleborn’s moment was priceless.

“It’s incredible, it’s life-changing for people,“ Logue said
