Brandon Valley’s trio of doubles teams dominated Tuesday’s home ESD Conference dual 7-2 victory against the Mitchell Kernels. Two of the three doubles teams won by 10-1 margins, while the third posted a 10-4 victory.
“The girls played great tennis tonight – doubles really dominated,” said Lynx head coach Jesse Gladis.
Gladis said the Lady Lynx started strong and didn’t look back on senior night, which recognized the trio of Erin Buse, Kate Ellis and Leandra Marais with flowers and family introductions.
“It was their last home meet,” Gladis said, “and it was a great night!”
Buse and her No. 1 doubles partner Jessica Sadler and Hanna Mutschelknaus and Makenzie Marso (No. 2) both handed their Mitchell opponents 10-1 losses. The No. 3 team of Marais and Emily Konz scored the 10-4 victory.
The Lady Lynx also won four of the six singles matches played. Buse (No. 1), Sadler (No. 2), Mutschelknaus (No. 3) and Marais (No. 5) all registered wins against their Mitchell opposition. Buse and Mutschelknaus bested their competition by 10-5 margins, while Marais blanked Allison Buckley, 10-0, and Sadler handed Tatum Dean a 10-1 setback.
Gladis said he was please with how the team adjusted to Mitchell’s style of play.
“Mitchell has a young team that gets the ball back on the court, so it was great to see the girls step up and put pressure on their opponents,” he said. “They made girls that normally just return balls, hit out.”
This week, the 17-4 Lady Lynx are preparing for the three-day Class AA State Girls Tennis Tournament. The tourney gets underway at 9 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, and will be played in Brandon and Sioux Falls. For the tournament pairings and court locations and times, go to www.sdhsaa.com.
