Brandon, Garretson team up in Halloween endeavor

Two neighboring communities are teaming up to scare the wits out of you this Halloween season.

For seven years, Marissa and Tim Wollman and friends have been bringing the thrill of the holiday to Garretson. It started as an entertainment for family and friends of the Wollmans and expanded to a community-wide celebration.

But this year, the Wollmans said personal conflicts were going to keep them from staging the ghoulish event – thus enters Michael Gross of Brandon, also a Halloween fanatic.

“My husband an I had just determined we weren’t going to be able to do it this year, and then the stars aligned and he asked us to pair up with him,” Marissa Wollman said.

This year, the ghosts and goblins are moving from Garretson to the Corson Industrial Park, to Lacey’s Rental, a port-a-pot business owned and operated by Gross.

“It’s a nice merger,” Gross said “I’ve got the building and the land, and the Jesse James Players have a lot of great assets (props).”

Inside Gross’ 60-by 80-foot building will be a haunting maze of rooms for people to wind their way through. At the end, another area – encased by port-a-pots – is set up for more thrills, chills and torture, as Gross explains it.

“There’s so much to it,” he said. “We’re gearing it toward terrifying people.”

In past years, Wollman said 400 to 500 kids, teens and adults dared to venture through the Garretson’s Spooky Trail each night. Planners expect just as many – or more. And that’s the idea behind the joint venture. Several organizations from both communities are joining in the endeavor to raise funds for their respective causes.

Garretson organizations that will benefit from the event include the After-Prom Committee, Garretson Soccer Association, Garretson High School’s freshman class and the Jesse James Players, the community theatre group.

Brandon’s benefactors will be the Brandon Valley Backpack program and two local church youth groups, who will sell concessions on all five nights.

The Brandon Edge is also helping to stage Family Fun Day from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 26.

“In a sense we are completely gearing it toward younger kids, but we want the entire family to come out,” Gross said.

Some events planned for the day are coffin races, a “mummify” your friend contest, and horse-drawn wagon rides by Dirk Johnson.
