Ellie Holmes’ 14th birthday last week is one she’ll likely remember for a lifetime.
While it wasn’t the Brandon Valley eighth grader’s golden birthday last Tuesday, it certainly was a unique one: Ellie turned 14 on 11/12/13.
“My math teacher, Mr. Tietgen, tried to figure it out,” she said.
Turns out, turning 14 on 11/12/13 is somewhat of a special occurrence, Ellie’s teacher informed her.
The Brandon Valley 7-8th grade math teacher explains: “In 1999, the world's population was estimated at around 6 billion people. Estimates have the average number of people born per day at that time was nearly 330,000. Therefore, the chance for a person to have their 14th birthday on 11/12/13 is approximately 0.0055 percent, which is roughly one out of 18,200 people.”
In the months leading up to her special day, Ellie said she was aware of the sequence of numbers this year’s birthday presented.
“I just didn’t realize how rare it is,” she said, clutching a bouquet of flowers older brother, Cam, delivered to her at school earlier that day.
Ellie’s peers at Brandon Valley Middle School – some she says she doesn’t even know – were eager to celebrate the special day with her on Tuesday
“ I had a kid sing ‘Happy Birthday’ at lunch all by himself to me, and I don’t even know who he is,” said the daughter of Mike and Val Holmes. “And the flowers, they were pretty special, too. Actually, it’s been a really, really good day – it’s one of my best birthdays ever!”
