The Brandon Valley Board of Education made local soccer enthusiasts happy last week when they approved sanctioning the sport a year earlier than planned.

A $35,000 donation from the Brandon Area Soccer Association to had much to do with the early move.

“BASA has been very, very cooperative to work with in making this happen,” said Superintendent Dave Pappone.

BASA, which has organized the high school club programs for both boys and girls under the South Dakota State Soccer Association, has previously asked the Brandon Valley Board of Education to sanction the sport but were denied for funding reasons. Randy Marso, district activities director, estimated the cost to field junior varsity and varsity programs for both boys and girls at about $40,000.

BASA has stepped up to make a one-time donation of $35,000 to make the program a school-sanctioned sport next year. BASA is also handing over its uniforms and equipment.

BASA’s request to sanction soccer as a high school sport stems from the SDSSA ending its sponsorship of high school club soccer activities after the 2014 season.
Last month, Marso said the district was getting close to being in a position to add the sport without eliminating other programs.

“With the club state tournament next fall being the last one, I see a vast majority of the school soccer programs being sanctioned by 2015,” Marso said. “Right now you have more schools in the club tournament than the SDHSAA tournament, but that won’t be the case in 2015.”

Intermediate school
The digital age is being used as a key tool to keep its voting public informed of the upcoming $11.95 million bond issue. On Dec. 3, Brandon Valley School District taxpayers will decide the fate of a proposed intermediate school.

The bond promotion committee is using the district website – www.brandonvalleyschools.com – to educate voters on the proposed school that will house grades five and six.
Available on the district website is a blog dedicated to the proposed building project. And last week, a preliminary site plan was also posted.

The bond promotion committee has organized two public forums before the Dec. 3 election. The first is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21 at Fred Assam Elementary. The second forum is planned for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26 in the Community Room at Brandon Valley High School.

The polls will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3. Absentee ballots are now available during normal business hours in the Central Office at 300 S. Splitrock Blvd.
