Brookings outscored Brandon Valley 21-4 in the fourth quarter to defeat the Lynx 51-33 in an Eastern South Dakota Conference girls basketball game Thursday in Brookings.

While the Bobcats led 26-16 at halftime, the Lynx used a strong third quarter to come within a point of their hosts, 30-29.

And then came the 21-point outburst by the Bobcats.

“It’s disappointing to be in a one-point game heading into the fourth quarter and then lose by 18,” said Lynx head coach Mark Stadem. “We needed to do a better job executing in the fourth quarter.”

No Lady Lynx finished in double-digit scoring. The team was led by a pair of seniors, Kara Schroeder, who produced eight points, and Lexi Hoover, who put up seven.
Sophomore Kasara Pollema tossed in five.

As a team, the Lynx turned in a 38 percent effort from the floor, 13-34, and were 5-for-12 at the free throw line.

Taylor Thorson was Brandon Valley’s leader on the boards. The Lady Lynx sophomore had six rebounds. Hannah Paauw hauled in three. Thorson also accounted for two of the team’s four total assists and two of their eight steals.

The Lynx had 24 turnovers in the contest.

For Brookings, Sara Tvedt had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Sidney Berreth had 11 points. Lauren Coughlin had five steals.

Coming off a 33-point loss to O’Gorman two days prior, Stadem said he saw improvement in his team. “We were better in this game,” he said. “The effort was good and the girls are showing improvement.”
