BV wrestlers face some of state's top talent at Floyd Farrand

The Lynx wrestlers got a preview of some of the top talent that’s out there this season the two-day Floyd Farrand Invite at Sioux Falls Lincoln last Friday and Saturday.
“The overall talent level at the tournament is the best it has been in years,” Brandon Valley head coach Kraig Presler said.
The Lynx, which came up short in a variety of close matches Friday, turned those close matches their way on Saturday, to finish 10th in the 18-team tournament.
“If we correct a few technical errors, and improve our conditioning to the point where we can maintain an aggressive pace through the whole match, we will do very well the rest of the season,” he said.
Although Brandon Valley came away from the tournament without a champion, Presler said they came away with some key information that should help them down the stretch.
“The best aspect of this tournament was that it highlighted the areas we need to improve,” Presler said. “We will have lots of tough competition through January, beginning with Huron on Jan. 3, and we learned some things at the Floyd Farrand tournament that will help us compete better in those events.”
Five Lynx wrestlers did place at the Floyd Farrand, garnering a trio of third places and a pair of fifth place finishes.
Conner Rowbotham (126) won two matches, a pin over Brock Stien of Lennox and a win by decision against Parkston’s Dawson Semmler, before meeting up with Roosevelt’s Troy Kiggins. Rowbotham’s loss to the Rough Rider was the only loss he’d suffer, as he went on to pin Zane Joens of Sturgis in 2:02 to win third place.
Senior Adam Presler (138) was handed his first setback of the season. After pinning Jacob Ziegler of Lennox in a quick 11 seconds, Watertown’s James Suter defeated outscored Presler 5-3. The Lynx grappler then went on to defeat Nahom Abebe of O’Gorman by major decision, setting the stage for a third-place match against Suter. Presler, however, got the win by default.
Wyatt Winter, the junior 160-pounder for the Lynx, opened the tournament with a win and then fell to Watertown’s Jake Brower by a 3-1 decision. In the wrestlebacks, Winter posted a 13-4 major decision win against Roosevelt’s Sean Muilenberg, which put him in position to wrestle for third place. Winter captured third by registering a 9-4 win by decision over Vermillion’s Brandon Hertz.
Brandon Valley’s fifth place finishes came from Andrew Sorensen (195) and Clayton Ebright (220).
After receiving a bye in his opening round, Sorensen lost an 8-3 decision to Dan Marlette of Washington, the Lynx sophomore took it to Andrew Soukup of Wagner, shouldering him in 46 seconds. In the fifth place match, the Lynx grappler scored a 5-2 decision win against Payson Dirk of Sturgis.
Ebright’s journey to the fifth place match began with a pin in 41 seconds against Ali Bakan of Lincoln. He followed that victory up with another pin, this time against Watertown’s Cole Jurgens at the 1-minute, 46-second mark.
The Lynx junior then suffered his first loss of the tournament when Brady Reiff of Parkston shouldered him in 31 seconds. Ebright, however, battled back against Watertown’s Cole Jurgens, pinning him in 2:37.
With injuries and illness starting to rise in the Lynx program, the coach remains optimistic as the team heads into 2014.
“We are hoping to be back at full strength soon,” Presler said.
Brandon Valley heads back to the mats Jan. 3 when they pay a visit to Huron for an ESD dual. The Brandon Valley-hosted Dan Pansch Invite follows on Jan. 11.
