The Lynx came away from their own invitational – the Dan Pansch-Jesse James Invite – Saturday with a second place winner, two third places, a pair of fourth place wrestlers and a trio of sixth place finishes to capture fifth place as a team in the 18-team event.
Brandon Valley head coach Kraig Presler said the team effort on Saturday was the best in years for the program.
In all, 10 Lynx varsity wrestlers placed in the top eight, including three junior varsity grapplers – Lincoln Ode, Levi Sternburg and Andy Holmes – who also earned a place on the awards stand.
“This, and a large number of extra points from pins – four from Eric Eigenberg alone – helped the team to a fifth place finish,” said Lynx head coach Kraig Presler. “Although we did not crown an individual champion this year, the 13 placewinners was our best in many years.”
After six road outings, Presler said it was to wrestle on the home mats.
“It was great to finally wrestle at home, and it was nice to be able to wrestle a number of our JV wrestlers in the tournament,” he said. “With 18 teams this year, it was a very full day of wrestling.”
Adam Presler wrestled his way to the title match of the 138-pound weight class. The Lynx senior made easy work of his first two opponents, Harrisburg’s Cade Bruggeman and Garretson’s Brendan Harris, pinning both in 1:21 and 1:09 respectively. That set the stage for a semifinal round against O’Gorman’s Nahome Abebe. Presler came out of the match with a 10-1 major decision.
The championship proved to be a true title match, as Presler and Kyle Yasgar of Roosevelt went the distance and then some, with Yasgar pulling off the 2-1 decision win in overtime.
Four Lynx wrestlers worked their way to wrestle for third place. Wyatt Winter (160) and Erik Ode (285) both won their respective weight classes.
Winter’s route to the third place match began with a quick pin (0:30) against Tea Area’s Jeremiah Maka. He followed that victory up with a major decision (14-4) against Colin Simons of Huron, before succumbing to Flandreau’s Jace Christianson.
Winter then pinned Dell Rapids’ Austin Eulberg in 1:19 to position himself for the third-place battle against Brandon Hertz of Vermillion. The match belonged to Winter, who claimed the 8-4 decision win.
After losing his opening match to West Central’s Hunter Hanley, Ode defeated Roosevelt’s Austin Bolich and decision Dell Rapids’ Jacob Haberger 3-0. He then met up against teammate Andy Holmes, who he pinned in 29 seconds. He followed that up with another pin, this time against Hanley, who he started the day out against. Ode returned the favor, shouldering him in 3:48. Ode went on to take third place, defeating Huron’s Josh Waagen by a 3-0 decision.
Eric Eigenberg (182 pounds) came away with fourth place, when Bailey Schoenfelder of Huron pinned him in 44 seconds. It was the second meeting of the day with the Tiger wrestler, who pinned him in 1:02 their first session.
Eigenberg registered wins against Chamberlain’s Sean Wood, Canton’s Dalton Nelson, teammate Levi Sternburg and Bon Homme-Scotland’s Jesse Lozano.
After receiving a bye in his opening round, Andrew Sorensen (195 pounds) shouldered West Central’s Sam Lynde in 1:18 and then suffered a setback by Canton’s Tanner Broughton. In the wrestlebacks, Sorensen posted a 6-3 decision against Chamberlain’s Nick Claussen before suffering a 9-3 setback by decision to Huron’s Tyler Kleinsasser.
A trio of Lynx wrestlers collected fifth place honors Saturday. Chase Small (120) garnered three pins and win by technical fall en route to the fifth place match. He opened with a pin against Zach Luke of Luverne, then was pinned by West Central’s Austin Ideker. Small went on to pin his next two opponents, John Gehl of Fulda-Murray County Central) and Taylor Dalen of Harrisburg. Carter Lohr of Roosevelt had the obvious advantage in his 15-0 technical fall win against Small. In the fifth place mach, Canton’s Devin Stork pinned the Lynx wrestler in 4:19.
Conner Rowbotham’s (126 pounds) road to the fifth place match began with a pair of wins – a pin against Chamberlain’s Jacob Lacota and then a win by default.
Rowbotham forfeited his next two matches and lost the fifth place match by default.
The Lynx continue their string of home wrestling events this Friday when they
welcome two Eastern South Dakota Conference teams to the mats, Aberdeen Central and Yankton. Wrestling starts at 5 p.m.
“We have many tough competitions approaching this month,” Presler said. “Our focus remains to be at our best for the region and state meets, which are now just over a month away.”
Next Thursday, Brandon Valley hosts a pair of Metro Conference opponents – Roosevelt and Washington. It is the team’s final home event of the season.
