Lady Lynx head coach Mark Stadem and company returned to the winning side of things Friday, as they held on to hand the visiting Watertown Arrows a 49-46 setback.

The Eastern South Dakota Conference game came down to the wire, but Brandon Valley was able to capitalize on some last-minute errors by the Arrows to secure the victory.

“It was good to get a win in a close game,” Stadem said. “The girls really had to work for this one. (We) made some nice plays down the stretch,” Stadem said. “We really worked hard and came up with some neutral balls.”

Brandon Valley jumped out to a 16-9 lead in the first quarter. Watertown then took charge of the second and third quarters, taking a 32-27 advantage into the break and a 41-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

To overcome Watertown’s quickness and well-aimed shots, the Lynx had to make some adjustments at halftime. Stadem said his team made those adjustments “and did a great job of executing them.”

The Lady Lynx were led by the offensive efforts of senior Lexi Hoover and junior Carley Kueter. Both girls finished in double digits, with Hoover netting 13 and Kueter accounting for a dozen. Sydnie Buchheim tossed in six. Brandon Valley had minimal chances at the line, netting 8-11.

For Watertown, Ellie Stevenson scored 20 points. The Arrows got 17 of their points at the charity stripe, where they had 25 opportunities.

The teams matched up on the boards, with the Lynx getting one more than the Arrows, 29-28. Kueter hauled in 11, while Hoover, Buchheim and Lilli Jasper all grabbing four.

“We had numerous girls make plays and we are going to need that to be successful,” Stadem said.

The Lynx had 17 turnovers; Watertown limited theirs to 10.

The victory improves Brandon Valley to 2-6. The Lady Lynx hit the road for a pair of games Thursday and Saturday at Harrisburg and Sioux Falls Lincoln, respectively. Tip off for both games is 7 p.m.
