SDHSAA proposes fifth 11-man football class
By Staff reports

April 04. 2014 9:28AM
The South Dakota High School Activities Association might be sticking with seven classes of football, after all.

Athletic directors were presented with discussion items a their spring conference Thursday in Deadwood that would give the state five 11-man classes and two nine-man classes starting in 2015.

The proposal would add a Class11C to “promote a return to 11-man football in South Dakota,” drawing several schools or co-ops from the current 9AA level to make the leap to 11-man.

Class 11AAA would remain at eight schools, though O’Gorman would petition up to make it nine. Those top eight schools (using current enrollment data) would be Roosevelt, Rapid City Central, Lincoln, Washington, Rapid City Stevens, Aberdeen Central, Watertown and Brandon Valley.

Under the plan, schools would not be allowed to petition down.

Class 11AA would consist of the night-largest schools through all with an average daily membership of 400 or greater, followed by Class 11A (ADM from 400 through 200), 11B (200 to 120); 11C (male-only ADM between 60 and 47.5).

The remaining schools would be divided into two 9-man classes, with 32 teams from each 9-man class making the playoffs.

Other proposed changes with this plan:

• Male only enrollment numbers cold be used for football rather than total average daily membership (grades 9-11).

• Schools with a higher-than-normal percentage of free and reduced lunch students could have their enrollment numbers adjusted to compensate.

If passed by the athletic directors, the plan would go down before the state activities board April 16 in Pierre.
