A new adult tennis program is being “served up” in Brandon this summer, and it begins June 10.

The Brandon Tennis Association is introducing Mylan World TeamTennis, similar to the Junior Team Tennis program the group has offered for a number of years.

“It’s a very fun program that creates a real social atmosphere,” said organizer Dick Hahn.

The BTA is the first community tennis association in South Dakota to offer this program, which is explained as a revolutionary take on tennis, emphasizing a gender-equity team concept that features the best in professional team tennis competing for the King Trophy. Former women’s tennis pro Billie Jean King co-founded the league in 1974.

“We are really excited to have this program because we wanted to have an adult forum that allows people to play in a fun setting and the opportunity to advance to regional and possibly national tournaments,” said BTA President Becky Blue.

The top team in one of two divisions (upper and lower skill levels) may advance to the regional competition and possibly go on to play at the national tournament.

“To me, it’s very similar with what we’ve done with our kids in Junior Team Tennis,” Blue explained, “We’ll have co-ed teams that play singles, doubles and mixed doubles.”

What’s different from the Junior Team Tennis program is that the coach may substitute players during the match.

For Mylan World TeamTennis, each team is comprised of two men, two women and a coach. Team matches consist of five sets with one set each of men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The first team to reach five games wins each set. One point is awarded for each game won, and a nine-point tiebreaker is played if a set reaches four all. If necessary, overtime and a “supertiebreaker” are played to determine the outright winner of the match.

The 7 to 9 weekly Tuesday night league starts June 10. Hahn said teams may register by contacting him at 940-1500, by emailing him at dickhahn@KW.com. or online on the BTA’s Facebook page or

“There’s still time to sign up,” Hahn encouraged.

Cost of the program, which is open to adults 18 and over, is $30 per player for the season.
